Blackjack Strategy |
Basic Strategy:
Before we get into a basic strategy for blackjack,
let's consider the objective first. Many people define the objective
as getting a hand as close as possible to 21. This is not always
true. Your objective is to beat the dealer, and learning this lesson
is your first step on the road to becoming a winning blackjack
player. It is possible to beat the dealer by holding a hand that
totals less than 21 - a 12 or 13, for example. Remember, there are
two ways to win: by holding a higher hand than the dealer, and by
not hitting a breaking hand and waiting for the dealer to break.
This is a decision that many beginning players seldom make. Thinking
they must always get as close as possible to 21, they hit more often
than they should, thus breaking, losing more often and contributing
to the casino edge of up to 6 percent over the non-system players.
Soft and Hard:
Many novice players don't know what is meant by a
"soft hand", specifically
"soft17". A "soft hand" in blackjack means a combination of an ace
with any cars other than any "10" value card. For instance, an ace with a "3"
value card dealt to you as the firs two cards is called a "soft hand", and is so called
because you can count the ace as either "11" or as "1". In this example, you have both:
"14" and "4", depending on how you choose to tally the value. The importance of a soft hand is that it
gives you more options with which to make your decisions. Most important is the fact
that with a soft hand you can take a "hit" (ask for and
receive another card) without any danger of going over 21.
This is very important, because
it offers you a chance to get closer to 21, and closer to a winning
hand, especially if the dealer's up-card shows a probable hand
better than the one dealt to you, and do so without the danger of
"busting" with the draw of just that one additional card -
as would be the case if such a hand was a "hard-14".
In our example, you can count the ace-and-3 as
"4", and receive a hit of, say, "9".
If you did not have a soft hand, and instead had a
"hard 14" (also known as a "stiff"), a hit of
"9" would have put you over 21, a "bust", in
which case you would automatically lose the bet. But by counting the
ace card as a "1", and receiving a hit of "9",
this combination of "ace" and the "3"and the
"9"will make you a "13".
Many times you can make a double-down bet in the
correct circumstances. This, along with receiving a
"blackjack" (the "natural"), are you two
main advantages over the House in Blackjack play. |
