Double-down:
For
example, some casinos will only allow you to double-down on "10" or "11" value
combinations of the first two cards dealt. This means that if the dealer is
showing a "6" as the up-card and you have a first-two-cards total of "9", you
can't double down.
To double-down is another choice that the informed player
can make, and therefore offers you an additional advantage. In the
above example, if the dealer has an up-card of "6",and a down card of "10", and
then draws another card of "6", he has "22", a bust hand. If you were able to
double on your first two-card hand of "9", no matter what extra card you drew,
you would win twice the amount of your original bet. By eliminating this choice
on all two-card values except "10" and "11", the casino further reduces player's
choices, and hence your ability to win more money.
Naturals:
If you
have first two cards are an ace and a face card or ten, giving him a count of 21
in two cards, you have a natural or blackjack. If you have a natural and
dealer does not have a natural, dealer immediately pays that player one and
one-half times the amount of his bet. If dealer has a naturals, he immediately
collects the bets of all players who do not have naturals, but no player need
pay any more than he bet originally. If dealer and you both have naturals, the
bet of you is a stand-off.
Splitting Pairs:
When the
first two cards you receive are of equal value, you may elect to split them and
play each as a separate hand, drawing until you are satisfied or break. You play
the card on your right first and then the card on your left. Two 10-value cards
such as a king and jack can also be split, but when aces are split, most casinos
permit drawing only one card to each split ace. If a 10-value cards is drawn to
a split ace, or vice versa, the resulting hand is considered as 21, not a
blackjack, and is paid off at 1 to 1. This 21 would tie any dealer 21 but would
lose to a dealer blackjack.
Hitting:
If you are
not satisfied with the total of your hand, you may draw one or more cards, as
long as you don't break, or go over 21. To call for a hit. When the hit card
breaks your hand, the dealer will automatically scoop up your bet and place your
cards in the discard tray, as you have lost, even if the dealer subsequently
breaks.
